Gingerbread cookies are a classic holiday treat that have been around for centuries. This recipe has been passed down through generations of my family, and it's always a hit at our holiday gatherings. The combination of spices and molasses gives the cookies a unique flavor that's sure to please everyone. The cookies are also easy to make, so they're great for busy holiday bakers.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) salt
  • 3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) molasses

Cooking Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg and molasses until combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  • Roll the dough into 1-inch (2.5cm) balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned.
  • Allow to cool before serving.
